HazCat is a chemical identification equipment kit that is approved by the Department of Homeland Security and used by the EPA in the field and in labs. HazCat can identify biological, chemical, industrial, and narcotic substances.
In 1982, Robert Turkington and a team of hazardous materials professionals and chemists founded HazTech Systems™, Inc. to address the need for field identification of hazardous substances. This initiative followed a 1980 spill on California’s Oakland Bay Bridge, highlighting the necessity for a field identification tool for responders with limited chemistry knowledge.
They developed the HazCat® Chemical Identification System, which underwent rigorous testing and refinement before becoming widely available to HazMat responders in 1986. Today, the HazCat® System is used across North America and internationally by various organizations, including the EPA, CDC, Department of Defense, and major fire departments.
For nearly 25 years, HazTech Systems™ has provided public safety personnel with tools and certified training to identify unknown chemicals in spills and hazardous material releases. Following the terrorist events of September 11, 2001, HazTech Systems™ developed a biological substance identification methodology, addressing the increased need for identifying chemical and biological threats in the post-9/11 landscape.
